I installed gnome, xfce and log on to gnome classic, gnome and xfce, there is no problem with these desktop environments. The function keys and backligt works properly. I think i would use gnome or xfce instead of unity. People say that unity is a disaster, it is not a disaster but still a bad desktop environment. It is buggy and not a user friendly environment.
