...Problem Resolved for my dell c640 laptop! I have installed the latest kernel in the repository (i.e. apt-get install linux-image-2.6.20-16-386) and after the restart everything works fine. I don't know why the linux-386 metapackage that is already installed uses the linux-image-2.6.20-15-386 package.
