Update: Lot of problems so tried to install 32bit Mint Linux over Ubuntu without formatting the drive. First attempt ended with a Kernel write error. Tried again now with swiping the drive clean with a new formating. This time installation was a success and no problems so far.
So I assume this was a problem with my hardware and not a bug in Ubuntu.
