Yes, you are right and I was (partially) wrong. The files does in fact not show 
up among recent files (new installation Ubuntu 11.10). After closer 
investigation I believe that this is due to the fact that Gedit for some reason 
is set as the default application for .lyx files. After changing this to LyX 
the files show up and is opened by LyX on the Dash.
Sorry for reporting a non-bug, but perhaps it is worth looking a bit closer 
into this and if possible change default application to open LyX files.
