I changed some BIOS settings, hoping to make the system more stable. I used the 
recommended most stable options.
After changing the BIOS I no longer get a garbled screen when using the 3D 
driver (at least that I can remember?). Instead the screen only goes out of 
sync or just black.
I also moved the card to another PCI slot (PCI:0:9:0), but with the same 
results, no improvements.

I added: Option "DRI" "off", but it had no effect (that I could tell).
The screen still goes our of sync or blank.

The system is stable if I use the "vesa" driver. It only messes up when
I use the "ati" driver (and I think only just when AIGLX is enabled, but
I'll have to do more testing.....).

Is there any way to somehow test the graphic card to see if it's
defective -- bad hardware? I think it might be the card, but don't know
any way to know for sure. I also have windows on the computer, and it
works with the 3D driver from ATI. So, I'm not sure if it's just the
Linux drivers?
