I have a problem like this on a Dell 640m (Core duo, 945GM). However I don't get a corrupted screen. On VT1 (alt+F1) I can read messages Grub prints just after a kernel selected (Loading 'Ubuntu 2.6.x etc) until "Loading, please wait...". Plus I read "mdadm: No devices listed in file conf were found" message (something not critical, I suppose). Other VTs from 2 to 6 shows a simple black screen with top left blinking cursor.
This problem turns critical if graphical start up fails.
