I'm also working a lot with VMs for testing and this interferes with
CTRL+ALT to exit the viewer or worst ALT+arrow to switch console.

As a workaround, the gconf key for the HUD key is
/apps/compiz-1/plugins/unityshell/screen0/options/show_hud and you can unset it
with:
gconftool -t string -s
/apps/compiz-1/plugins/unityshell/screen0/options/show_hud ""

or remap it to any other key of your choice.

To restore the original mapping run:
gconftool -t string -s
/apps/compiz-1/plugins/unityshell/screen0/options/show_hud "<Alt>"
