Public bug reported:

In the previous version of VLC, I could enable the Use SPDIF switch and
VLC would send the audio directly over the HDMI output. This would allow
the amplifier to do the decoding. In version 2.0 using this switch does
not work and nothing is sent over to the amplifier. I'm using Ubuntu
Precise.

I expect this to work just like it did in version 1.1. Recently version
2.0 was included in Ubuntu Precise which is when the problems started
for me.
