I'm using Oneiric with Compiz 0.9.6 in the same computer I was having this issue before. Yesterday I installed World of Goo, Penumbra, and Gish and was able to play all of them in fullscreen. I tried installing them also on a Precise live USB, but as I couldn't get them to run (due to some other issue) I wasn't able to see if it's working in Compiz 0.9.7. Nevertheless, it seems like the problem is gone.
