A few new bits of information:

a) On VTs, keyboard works (i.e. no spurious repeats), but is slow.

b) Turning X keyboard repeat off kills the spurious repeats. Keyboard is still
slow
and as is to be expected, keyboard repeat does not work (*g*)

c) Suspending and resuming the machine (this is a Thinkpad R40) makes the
keyboard
fast & working as normal. I'm puzzled.

d) The phenomenon is persistant across reboots, not "random" in any way.
