FWIW, I disabled DRI with Option "DRI" "false" in xorg.conf, but I still got a hang just now. That would seem to confirm that this regression is not related to the mesa driver.
This is still with the xserver-xorg-video-intel package shipped with Ubuntu oneric (2:2.15.901-1ubuntu2.1).
