I am very sorry, but from my point of view, like you can read in the header, this is exactly one bug, the bug that updating from Unity 5.4 to Unity 5.6 broke the complete Unity 2D and 3D. Before the update - both did work. And sorry, that I can't file a bug for unity-2d, because I'm not anymore on Precise Pangolin. The last bug that occured was a killer, and the install media of Precise Pangolin from yesterday had a kernel lockup on my Eee PC, so I could only install Oneiric Ocelot.
