An aside comment for information: I have now set up a second machine with Ubuntu 12.04 beta 1 updated, and on the second machine, the dash focus does work correctly, which means that I can now be very sure that on the problem machine in the bug here, it does have the bug, and the problem is NOT my lack of experience nor my own finger trouble! (just checking....) :-)
