Thank you Alex Burfee (joop-wow) I've had this bug since gnome3/unity 11.04. In 12.04 beta 1 there is a new version of gpointing-device-settings 1.5.1-6 and the bug is still there. Thanks to Alex I have a fix - I posted it in ubuntuforums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1941067 basically just xinput edits in a script with a little more how to automate it.
