You should never try to open /var/log/lastlog directly (i.e. using cat, tail or similar text-dumping tools). The file is sparse database file and can, in some cases, appear extremely large to utilities that do not understand sparse files. You may have run out of memory trying to open it. Use the "lastlog" command instead
