More testing revealed that 1) the problem still persists with Gutsy's linux-image-2.6.22-5-generic and 2) the problem is probably caused by the CD-ROM firmware, replacing the Mitsumi drive with a Plextor drive fixed the problem: the Plextor was correctly detected as CD-ROM, whereas the Mitsumi is always detected as a non-removable harddisk.
