Brian, I also wanted to tell you the following about my problem :

1.)DVD's will not play on any of my players..mplayer, vlc and movie
player.
2.)I can't mount my DVD's when I go to places, computer, and left click
DVD-ROM and click mount.  It says no media present.
2.)I could play DVD's when I was using Dapper version of Ubuntu.

FYI.....RG

PS...I searched the forums and saw a lot of people having the same
problem with DVD play as I am having.
