Also, the shadow overdraw bug is an OLD bug in Unity that has been
around for quite some time. It was just harder to reproduce until 5.8.
The shadow overdraw bug in unity was previously observed in bug 763579,
and other bugs I can't find right now. I do have an experimental patch
(never committed) which would allow me to reproduce similar Unity
rendering bugs reliably.

I think it's all related to incorrect damage/rendering calls in
unityshell. However I don't yet know enough to explain how yet.

Everyone -
If you can reproduce the flickering/corruption reliably, please try this 
workaround:
1. Run: ccsm
2. In Workarounds, enable "Force full screen redraw (buffer swap) on repaint".
