All, when this happens next, could you please do this (while the desktop is 
hung!):
1. Switch to a virtual terminal (CTrl+Alt+F1) and log in.
2. cp .xsession-errors my-xsession-errors
3. sudo restart lightdm
4. Log in to whichever session still works for you (Unity/Unity2D/Gnome)
5. Attach the file "my-xsession-errors" from your home directory to this bug.
