Curtis, thanks, your suggestion worked.  
That wasn't the lib that gparted said was missing.
As far as I can remember any time I've installed gparted there were lib called 
out to be installed too.  Not this time, so re-installing the lib fixed it.  
Any way for us users to know what lib to re-install?
Appreciate the help.  My only recourse would have been to install ubuntu again.
