Hi "pnd", Ok... you don't need to recompile your kernel.. I did this job for you! :-D I recompiled the kernel just adjusting the features to make my external HDD works fine. The other features are default in Ubuntu. Because of that, just send an email to me and I can send to you my ".deb" kernel package and all you will want to do is install this package using "dpkg" or even a graphical interface like Synaptic.
