I also get this same or very similar problem on my Dell Mini-10. The Poulsbo (gma500) video drivers have alway been a problem for me like eveyone else with an affected machine. I have never been able to achieve the full display resolution of 1350x768.
I was hoping the the new 12.04 LTS might contain better drivers. With this latest version the display is actually corrupted and wraps about halfway down so that the bottom half of the display is painted over the top half. Anyway, I blame Intel for releasing this oddball video adapter without full support but I do hope that someday it will have at least full 2D functionality. Thank to Ubuntu and all other open-source providers.
