Public bug reported:

After installing the proprietary ATI driver, the video during boot &
also on the console (<ctrl-alt-f1>) is garbled. There are plenty of
similar bugs filed. The problem can be easily be solved by adding a vga
parameter to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub. Other than
reported eg on http://nickolaszev.blogspot.com/2011/06/plymouth-startup-
with-fglrx.html, it doesn't seem necessary to set FRAMEBUFFER=y in /etc
/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash. This bug is a problem because it doesn't
just affect the splash screen but also the rendering of the console.

Problem: garbled video

Work around: add a vga parameter -- this should be done or at least be
suggested to the user when installing fglrx.

I run 12.04 beta. This problem occurs on a Thinkpad W500
(http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:W500, http://thinkwiki.de/W500)
with a 1920x1200 screen.
