Python threading is weak and slow if the servers are unresponsive. 
There is no way to easily call Thread,cancel (and have it honored) if 
something times out.  You should be able to take a list of the first 
responders, and the methods used make use of ping, which does not work 
behind firewalls or places where an HTTP/FTP proxy is in use only.

Additionally, it is a GUI, so what if an Ubuntu Server admin wants to 
get the same effect from the command line?  What does he do?
