Some additional information: 1) The problem happens only when the outgoing interface is a wlan inteface but not on the eth interface.
2) When tracing the ip traffic with wireshark, the timeout happens on a DNS query for "Type=SOA Name=local Class=IN" This DNS query is sent only when connected via wlan but not when connected via eth. It is sent twice and times out twice. And it only happens on Ubuntu 12.04 but not on 11.10 from wich I upgraded.
