Thank you for your advice. I have now downloaded three versions of ubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso and tested them with mdsum.
In neither case was there any output as below. I renamed them slightly differently to avoid confusion. This cope of md5sum has generated an output with linux mint files, so I don't know what it ides not work here. Any clues? I am using Windows Vista on my download computer.
