** Description changed:

My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW. It has an optimal resolution of
1680x1050 which Ubuntu 12.04 is not finding. All I get is 1024x768.

I am able to manually set the optimal resolution with the xrandr command
although I am still having trouble making it stick through a reboot or
relogin.
