Regarding the fact that I do have a NVidia GeForce GT240, the symptomatics desribed above might be linked to a misfunction reported in bug # 763052. It seems that I can work in recovery mode due to the nouveau VESA driver, which was there without my involvement (as recommended in the second bug, so no need to install xserver- xorg-video-nouveau). After a recommendation I have tried to install the restricted NVidia driver, but without success (see the attached jockey log file).
