Aside from running dpkg-reconfigure, hand editing /etc/default/keyboard and then running `sudo udevadm trigger --subsystem-match=input --action=change` also works around the problem.
`setxkbmap fr oss` works around it for the session. Attached is a script that summarizes some keyboard configuration details. I'd like to know what X call is producing the error in xklavier, however not sure how to determine that short of inlining printfs or setting up xtrace. ** Attachment added: "kbd-debug" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-config/+bug/985065/+attachment/3092205/+files/kbd-debug -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/985065 Title: Can't use fr/oss keyboard layout by default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-config/+bug/985065/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
