Thanks for your help. I attempted to follow your instructions and this is what happened. I was able to install the image and headers but it completed with errors. I then restarted the system the manual way (ie pressing the power button until shutdown) and booted into the mainline kernel. The system was barely unsuable for me to test fully as my internet did not work and some of my applications like LibreOffice and general desktop interface behaved like it was a fresh install or something. Anyway I started as many of the applications as I was allowed.
They were firefox, libreOffice writer, terminal, sublime text and netbeans. Software center started but complained about some package inconsistencies - i think that was because there was no internet. This time though the system was able to shutdown completely by itself, but like i said, I am not sure if the issue has been fixed or not since I did not have a fully usable system. Prior to that though it was able to shutdown properly using linux- image-3.2.0-23-generic-pae. The only thing I didn't do in a typical usage session is to run sudo apt-get update. I am not sure if it has anything to do with my problem. Obviously in order for me to be able to type this message, I had to boot into linux-image-3.2.0-23-generic-pae. After this post, I will run sudo apt-get update again and try a shutdown/restart and will report back on how it went. Sorry if I was of much help as I am not a very experienced linux user. ** Description changed: I know this has been reported before and on one such report the status seems to show bug Fixed but today is 16/4/12 and i have just applied the latest updates to Ubuntu 12.04 beta 2 and the bug still persists for me. Basically, when i shutdown or reboot, the screen goes black but you can hear the fan running. It stays this way until I press the power button for about 7secs or so. My own investigation shows that when I log in and don't open any programs and I shutdown or reboot it works fine. Its when I perform my normal work on the system and try to shutdown or reboot then it hangs. Also I noticed that on the occassions that it fails to shutdown or reboot, I don't see the ubuntu name with the animated dots underneath. I am prepared to perform any test and report back to you if you help me. This seems to still be a problem for many and a quick google search will show. - --- + --- AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24.
