the important thing is to narrow down when exactly the regression happened. ubuntu 11.10 and ubuntu 12.04 differ in more than just the simple-scan version, but the scanner driver from libsane-backends changed as well and is probably the problem here. so we would like to know if on ubuntu 12.04 one version of simple-scan works and the other is broken (problem in simple-scan), or if e.g. one version of simple-scan works on ubuntu 11.10 but not on 12.04 (problem not in simple scan, but the driver).
