I think I'm affected by a similar bug. Also bugs #975848 and #986600 are
probable duplicates.  Bug #914557 could also be a duplicate but it's
quite older and the computer affected is using a nvidia graphic driver
instead of an intel one.

A few remarks from my side. When this happens, I can still move the
cursor (which changes shape depending on what type of widget is under
it), and change to a console (Ctrl + Alt + F1).

If I kill compiz ("killall -KILL compiz" twice in the console), and
restart it ("compiz -replace -display :0"), I get the screen back.
However, I'm probably restarting compiz incorectly, and I miss a window-
manager (but at least I can see everything and quit each application).
