I don't think bug 119531 is related to this bug. In that case, grub
wasn't being able to find the correct partition to boot up.

In your case,  ubuntu is booting up but failing at logon. I believe it's 
something else.
I had once a problem similar to yours at the gui login dialog. I would try to 
login and after a few seconds it would return to the same dialog. In my case, 
it turned out that I had run out of disk space. Maybe somehow your disk or at 
least your homedir is full?
