nohu_: Your machine is going to be significantly different, and more
than likely the problem is fundamentally different. You should file a
separate bug.

Here's a possible solution though: if your machine has nvidia graphics
and you're using the binary-only nvidia driver, try using the nouveau
driver instead. I seem to recall that some of the nvidia-based MacBooks
only support changing brightness via the GPU and that the proprietary
nvidia driver doesn't export brightness control.
