I have a similar problem in Xubuntu 12.04: synaptic, gparted etc ... are no mor startable from the menu. Starting /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome /polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 gives the same error message as above.
I have 2 AMD64 PC's and an i386 Laptop. The problem occurs on one of the PC's and the Laptop.
