Public bug reported: Sometime between June 13, 2011 and the release date of grub-pc 1.99-12ubuntu5 a change was committed to grub2 which prevents it booting from a USB key on my laptop (Asus M5000).
Using syntax: grub-install /dev/sdb --root-directory=/media/usbdisk installs successfully, on reboot results in: Bad or missing operating system, reboot or select valid boot device. The resulting usb key boots successfuly under virtualbox. A workaround is possible by chainloading grub from syslinux, although this is painful. I have investigated the issue with Jordan_U of #grub on freenode. We tried a grub-mkrescue image from #4248 without success. ** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/990888 Title: grub2 wont boot from USB any more To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/990888/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
