No problem about the aspera confusion.

I can now confirm that installing
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-rc3-precise/linux-image-3.4.0-030400rc3-generic-pae_3.4.0-030400rc3.201204152235_i386.deb
has completely addressed the original issue. It is a final fix. My hp
nc6400 now operates correctly (no kernel freeze) while on battery
power. This is the first and (so far) only fix I have seen, after
several years of searching for a solution!

I may try 3.4-rc4 at a later point. I'm happy to have a fully portable
laptop for now.
