The problem of Serge Hartmann (2007-05-29) and Yigael (2007-05-29) seems to be a different problem. Gaetano Pepe has the same problem, and also with Canon A430. F-spot uses the same libgphoto2 library.
1 out 10 times I can download pictures from my camera. So it is possible, but I don't know what makes it work 1 out of 10 times.
