I was able to fix this by installing Realtek's Linux driver (3.0) at the bottom 
of this page:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
You have to tar -jxvf the bz2 file it downloads and run the ./install script, 
then reboot. You also have to unmute the master volumes again in your mixer - I 
had done this before and the install of the driver muted them again. After 
this, my sound worked in Linux and then worked in MythTV after a configuration 
change to tell the audio to use the new driver.
