Ok, that all looks normal so I'm not sure why it fails to start.

Can you run the first command again, but this time check the return
value?

cat /etc/sysctl.d/*.conf /etc/sysctl.conf | sudo sysctl -e -p - ; echo
$?

Also, I just noticed that this was with the lucid version, which means
the correct source package here is qemu-kvm; reassigning.
