Public bug reported: The desktop workstation involved is an HP s7727c. All conditions reported relate to this same machine.
I was running Ubuntu 11.10 in 3D mode just fine. I evaluated 12.4 from the live CD. The live CD also ran just fine in 3D mode. However, after installing 12.4 to the hard drive, I was unable to boot into a GUI. Instead, I got a Video-Mode-Not-Supported error and was diverted to a shell login prompt. I was able to login at the prompt using the credentials that I provided during the installation process. In order to get this to work at all, I edited /etc/default/grub so that the line that read: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" was edited to read: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" I then executed 'update-grub'. After making this change I can boot 12.04 from the hard drive; but, it is into 2D mode. I still see the "Video Mode Not Supported" splash which I now regard as just a warning. The fact that I can run 12.04 from the Live CD convinces me that my hardware is compatible with 12.04. Therefore, I have to conclude that failure that I observe when trying to boot 12.04 from the hard drive is attributable to a bug. Note that all versions of Ubuntu mentioned above were 32 bit versions. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/994803 Title: Can only boot into 3D mode from Live CD.
