I found some troubleshooting documentation that helped out. I wound up editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. In the "Monitor" Section, I put in the HorizSync and VertRefresh values for the Hyundai L90D+ display that I looked up on their web site: HorizSync 31-80, VertRefresh 56-75. I rebooted and now I can select 1280x1024. It seems the monitor auto- detection still has troubles, but at least there's an easy workaround. Thank you for your help.
