** Description changed: After recently update kernel to 3.0.0-19.33 I cannot start the system. After selecting new kernel in grub menu it shows only "error: couldn't read file" I removed quiet and splash from booting options and it outputed a lot of data and hanged. What was intereseting there is "Cannot open root device UUID=[here was uuid] or unknown block (0,0)" and below Please append a corrct "root=" boot option I tried and added this option to the line linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-19-generic root=UUID=8873b057-f710-4b9e-9ebe-ce9b0e586cd2 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 root=/dev/sda5 but with no luck. I run knoppix live cd and fsck all partinions but no problems were found. I found similar problems on few forums Here: http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/gentoo-linux/94418-error-vfs-cannot-open-root-device-unknown-block-0-0-a-3.html and here: http://forums.funtoo.org/viewtopic.php?id=273 The solution there was missing SATA_AHCI support. I looked into my /boot/config-3.0.0-19-generic but sata suppor was enable there. Actually kernel config differs from the 3.0.0-17 only in name and signature, the rest is identicall. I run Dell Studio 15555 and I am able to run without errors on my previous kernel 3.0.0-17 System: Kubuntu 11.10 64bit + --- + AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24. + ApportVersion: 1.23-0ubuntu4 + Architecture: amd64 + ArecordDevices: + **** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices **** + card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog] + Subdevices: 1/1 + Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 + AudioDevicesInUse: + USER PID ACCESS COMMAND + /dev/snd/controlC1: zefiryn 2100 F.... pulseaudio + /dev/snd/controlC0: zefiryn 2100 F.... pulseaudio + CRDA: Error: [Errno 2] Nie ma takiego pliku ani katalogu + Card0.Amixer.info: + Card hw:0 'Intel'/'HDA Intel at 0xf0b00000 irq 43' + Mixer name : 'IDT 92HD73C1X5' + Components : 'HDA:111d7675,10280413,00100103' + Controls : 17 + Simple ctrls : 11 + Card1.Amixer.info: + Card hw:1 'HDMI'/'HDA ATI HDMI at 0xcfeec000 irq 44' + Mixer name : 'ATI R6xx HDMI' + Components : 'HDA:1002aa01,00aa0100,00100100' + Controls : 4 + Simple ctrls : 1 + Card1.Amixer.values: + Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0 + Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined penum + Playback channels: Mono + Mono: Playback [on] + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 + HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=c8f6d348-5bb8-4ad5-bc76-4cfd79edbbf2 + InstallationMedia: Kubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" - Release amd64 (20111012) + MachineType: Dell Inc.
