I think I have narrowed this down. It isn't actually a heimdal problem, it is a libldap problem. In libldap2 (used by slapd), the ldapi socket is defined as /var/run/slapd/ldapi , but in lipldap, used by heimdal , it is defined as /var/run/ldapi . The mismatch in the defaults is causing the two not to connect.
