im having the same problem in my Asus A8JP. sometimes the sound comes on, i can tell because i can hear the fuzz, and the volume of the fuzz changes as i change the volume. however, as soon as i start playing something through rhythmbox or xmms and try and adjust the volune, it mutes itself. sometimes i can get the volume back by changing the volume of the 'headphone' and 'PCM' channel, one after the other, till i hear the fuzz again.
