I'm having the exact same problem with Ubuntu 12.04 - I can connect, the connection will stay up and work for a while, then it will disconnect at a seemingly random period (usually within a 10 minute timeframe). I'm having to use Windows 7 on the same computer (dual boot) to establish reliable PPTP VPN connections that stay up.
