Public bug reported:

A bug report was just sent from my computer - you may notice it, it
states the version of Ubuntu I am using is 9.04 & that is true, although
it was not the case a few weeks ago - it was the most recent upgrade to
12.04 that has now put me in a bind that I cannot seem to escape.

Up until 2 weeks ago, my computer ran beautifully. Then came the new
12.04 LTS upgrade. I didn't expect any complications since I'd never had
any before & allowed the upgrade to run. Upon reboot, the screen was
blank except from some text at the top of the screen re: GRUB.

I attempted to correct the problem to the best of my ability & when
nothing seemed to work, I called the Customer Service Center for the
company that built my computer. We tried to correct the problem via
phone, but nothing helped. The bottom line, since I was unable to get
onto my computer to download any other version of Ubuntu software, take
whatever disk I did have & use that to get up & running again. And that
was precisely what I did.

I had the 9.04 version, and installed that. At last, I had a connection
again!! I was informed that I could not jump from 9.04 to 12.04 but
would need to perform all of the updates & upgrades until I arrived at
12.04 & should anticipate it working next time.

Well, that never happened. I cannot update, upgrade or even install a
different version of software now. Some of the messages state its a i386
(??) issue, while others relate to the version I'm using being
unsupported, & yet others say theres a failed security issue with Jaunty
Jackalope, etc. Unless I remain on 9.04 or boot from a disk (the only
one of which works happens not to be any of the Ubuntu disks, but a
Kununtu 12.04 disk).

At wits end trying to get to the root cause of my problem & hope someone
can help.
