If you want to run prerelease versions, then it makes sense to follow
instructions how to install digikam into your home directory (or any other
directory like /usr/local) in order not to clash with ubuntu packages:
http://www.digikam.org/?q=download/svn

I have svn version installed in /usr/local, including all dependencies
(newer libkdcraw, libkexiv2, exiv2, kipi-plugins), while I still have
ubuntu packages installed.

It would be good to reproduce the problem with svn version and using full debug
symbols (pass --enable-debug=full to ./configure script).
Please also provide any output that may be generated if digikam is started from
the terminal (Konsole).
