A couple of weeks ago I installed the Catalyst ATI driver, which I downloaded
from the AMD's site. I followed the instructions on this site:
http://www.hecticgeek.com/2011/10/how-to-install-atiamd-catalyst-linux-driver-11-9-in-ubuntu-11-10-oneiric-ocelot/
The driver installation was pretty straight forward. I only downloaded the
installation script, started it and followed the installation instructions.
I don't know what the difference is between the FGLRX and the Catalyst version
of the driver, but since I installed the Catalyst driver I haven't got any
issues with shutdown and restart. The standby and hibernate functions also
work, even though I don't get any graphical output, but that's not an issue for
me.
I think that we can close the case.
