Public bug reported: The Wireshark icon won't stay in the Ubuntu 12.04 application sidebar. When you launch it, you see the icon momentarily in the sidebar, but it goes away after a fraction of a second. At this state if you minimize the application, there is no obvious way to restore it. It has to be killed manually from the terminal and restarted.
